Project: 2002 Chevrolet Express 1500 - Crank No-Start Diagnosis

Overview

  • Vehicle: 2002 Chevrolet Express 1500
  • Engine: 5.0L V8 (L30 Vortec)
  • Problem: Crank no-start condition - NO SPARK at all
  • Status: 🔍 INVESTIGATION - Initial diagnosis

Repository

Gitea: https://gitea.loperfamily.com/Sage_Software/2002-Chevy-Express-1500

Initial Symptoms

  • Engine cranks normally but will not start
  • NO SPARK at any spark plugs
  • Security system status: [TBD]
  • Check engine light: [TBD]

Diagnostic Priority Order (GM 5.0L V8)

  1. Spark/Ignition System - Verify ignition coil, distributor, crankshaft position sensor
  2. Fuel Delivery - Check fuel pump operation, pressure, filter
  3. Compression - Check for mechanical issues
  4. Timing - Verify cam/crank timing
  5. ECM/Security - Check for security lockout, sensor failures

Common Causes for 2002 Express 5.0L (No Spark)

  • Crankshaft position sensor (CKP) - Most common failure point for no-spark conditions
  • Ignition coil - Coil pack failure
  • Distributor cap/rotor - Carbon tracking, worn contacts, moisture
  • Ignition control module - Inside distributor
  • Security system lockout - Theft deterrent system preventing spark
  • Wiring issues - Broken wires, poor connections to CKP or coil
  • ECM/PCM failure - Less common but possible

Tools Needed

  • OBDII scanner (GM-specific preferred)
  • Spark tester
  • Multimeter
  • Basic hand tools
  • Service manual for wiring diagrams

Next Steps

  1. Scan for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
  2. Check security light status
  3. Verify spark at coil pack
  4. Test crankshaft position sensor signal
  5. Check ignition coil power and ground
  6. Inspect distributor cap and rotor for damage
